The calcium ions in the water sample are replaced with magnesium ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid to release magnesium ions. Then, a buffer solution with pH 10 is added to react with the released magnesium ions in the water sample. The absorbance of the purple red substance is measured at a certain wavelength, and the concentration of the water sample is calculated.
